ESWET 2050 Waste to Energy Vision

Challenge

Waste management is a crucial topic for the sustainable development of our society. Globally, with more need to recycle and more need to have a sustainable solution for unrecyclable waste, waste generation is expected to grow by roughly 60% by 2050. That’s why the acknowledgement and cooperation of all parties involved – politics, research, technology providers, plant operators, policymakers and civil society – is essential towards the common good for the environment.

For this purpose, the European association ESWET – which represents the European Suppliers of Waste-to-Energy Technology – asked CLERENS to develop a document that provides the Vision for Waste-to-Energy in 2050, by addressing the current and future challenges of Waste-to-Energy in Europe and beyond.

Solution

CLERENS, working with the Waste-to-Energy experts, created the Vision 2050 document that demonstrates how Waste-to-Energy technologies are profoundly committed to resource efficiency and climate-change mitigation and are ready to contribute to better waste management in the EU and on a global scale. It shows how, by 2050, Waste-to-Energy plants will increasingly contribute to low-carbon energy systems and circular societies and it describes the policy and regulatory milestones needed to get there.

Result

The Vision “Waste-to-Energy 2050: Clean Technologies for Sustainable Waste Management” is a 28-page document featuring a graphic representation of the Waste-to-Energy Plant of the Future. The document has been promoted through a traditional media and social media campaign, and a launch event has been organised in Brussels in September 2019 with more than 150 attendees. The online campaign #WTEFUTURE has been also launched to promote the Vision, featuring a series of success stories coming from the members of the association.
