A look ahead: European energy research and innovation in 2023

We asked CLERENS Public Affairs Director, Wouter IJzermans, what we can expect in the coming months in the field of European energy research and innovation: “2023 will start with a period of reflection before diving headlong into the future”. Below is why.

Until 23 February 2023, the European Commission is hosting the largest public consultation ever held on the European R&I ecosystem. Stakeholders are invited to point out the achievements and shortcomings of the previous EU R&I programme Horizon 2020, its relevance and the procedures associated with the application process and funding management. In the survey, stakeholders are also encouraged to share their views on Horizon Europe’s design and the implementation up until now. Last but not least. stakeholders are also invited to identify future priorities for Horizon Europe’s Strategic Plan 2025-2027, providing inputs on emerging research and innovation needs and on potential synergies across EU programmes.

The discussion on future priorities will also take place on a more concrete level in 2023. Over the year, the co-programmed European Partnerships in Horizon Europe Cluster 5 (Climate, Energy and Mobility) will be updating their Strategic Research and Innovation Agendas, with the updates expected to be finalised in September. The revision is an excellent opportunity for stakeholders to influence the R&I strategy that will inform which topics will be included in the Work Programmes for the second half of the Horizon Europe. Becoming a member of these Partnerships right now therefore provides the opportunity to have your voice heard on the R&I priorities for years to come.

In the here and now, the recently published Work Programme for Horizon Europe for 2023 and 2024 contains many interesting calls in the fields of energy and mobility, addressing the above-mentioned policy concerns like reducing the dependence on critical raw materials and the implementation of the battery passport as set out in the new Batteries Regulation. The experienced proposal writers from CLERENS can help you find consortium partners, write a proposal and help with project management and communication once the project gets up and running.
